TOM SKILLING'S WEATHER CHALLENGE / iPhone game design - 2013
In 2013, the Cubicle Ninjas design agency worked with Chicago's WGN9 TV channel to design and develop an iPhone game based on their extremely popular weatherman, Tom Skilling. The game features Tom running around a green-screened TV studio, collecting weather map icons in a race against time. Collect good icons, like smiling suns and happy snowflakes, and Tom gets more time, but collect bad icons, like tornados and rain clouds, and Tom's time counts down faster.
I was responsible for most of the game's visual design, including the green-screen studio motif, the game's illustrated backgrounds, the user interface design, and the majority of the in-game weather icons. The character of Tom himself was illustrated by Cubicle Ninjas' CEO, Josh Farkas. The game features a few dynamic real-time elements, including backgrounds that change depending on the season, moving from a sunny Chicago skyline in the summer to a snowy rendition of Chicago's Cloud Gate sculpture and Pritzker Pavilion in the winter. The game also draws the current temperature directly from WGN9's weather forecast, and it features Game Center integration.
