SCREAMING OUT OF MY EARS FESTIVAL / event posters - 2006-2007
In 2006 and 2007 I designed promotional posters for the Screaming Out of My Ears Festival, a small day-long gathering of local bands and musicians in Essexville, Michigan. These posters (and the events they represented) were close to my heart, since they developed out of a sense of supporting local music scenes and passing on the idea of independent musical creativity to a younger generation. The intersection of location and identity, and the forms of personal expression that intersection produces, formed the foundation of much of my MFA thesis work at Cranbrook and then partially inspired some of the thoughts behind the 22 storefront gallery that Jessica Calek and I ran in Berwyn, Illinois. The idea of visually documenting that location/identity intersection came through very strongly in this 2007 Ears Festival poster, in which Michigan-based musicians face the watery vastness of the Great Lakes and create some kind of ritualistic performance.
